While its debatable wether you'd want to carry your sword on your back it doesn't make any sense to carry a dagger/knife on your back instead of on your chest or in your belt, but that would probably require new aniamtions and stuff, so a modder might not care to do that. These would all be sensible things to do and they would allow you to avenge your sons death with the remains of his sword and still have it be sensible, useful and effective. My advise is that he grind down the thickness, reshape it and sharpen it, shorten the hilt and cut down and/or reshape the guard. Same for the guard, a dagger/knife needn't have a guard like that, it'd just be in he way.
It doesnt have a great point, and its thickness is meant for a longsowrd, a dagger/knife doesnt need to be as thick or wide as the base of a longswords blade does.
